What is it? Based in South Ken, The V&A is a vibrant hub of decorative art, design, fashion and textiles. The permanent collection contains 2.3 million (yes, 2.3 million!) objects, with over 300,000 of them on display at any one time. The museum is so vast that you could easily spend several full days walking around. Plus, the majority of exhibits free to visit, and there are several themed tours available to join free of charge each day.
Why go? To check out some truly amazing artefacts encompassing everything from Michelangelo and Rodin sculptures to 17th century kimonos, 19th century portrait miniatures, to iconic Modernist furniture. And to eat cake in the sunny Italianate courtyard. Bliss.
Cromwell Rd, SW7 2RL. Free (excl. some temporary exhibits).
London is absolutely world class when it comes to museums. Obviously, we’re biased, but with more than 170 of them dotted about the capital – a huge chunk of which are free to visit – we think it’s fair to say that there’s nowhere else in the world that does museums better.
Want to explore the history of TfL? We’ve got a museum for that. Rather learn about advertising? We’ve got a museum for that too. History? Check. Science? Check. 1940s cinema memorabilia, grotesque eighteenth century surgical instruments, or perhaps a wall of 4,000 mouse skeletons? Check, check, check!
Whether you’re teaming up with like-minded friends or going it alone, London’s museums are great places to spend a bit of time. Here are some of our absolute faves.
